Always her smile was somehow a benediction

The women of the Church Service League of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem, want in this way to express a very real sorrow and loss in the death of Mrs. Susan Hill Steadman, and also an appreciation of her meritorious life and service as a loyal, faithful member of our organization.  Her life was a tireless offering to her God – her Home – her Children, her Friends and the World.  Always her smile was somehow a benediction, her handshake a tie of Christian fellowship… . She has bequeathed us a radiant spirituality, which we deeply feel, and feeling, are strengthened.

We decided to have a “Rooster Party” the following Tuesday

Miss Marshall read an interesting article on Church advertising based on the text, “Go ye into the byways & hedges & compel them to come in.” We decided to have a “Rooster Party” the following Tuesday to help on the Building Fund and to pay the 75¢ per member for St. Luke’s Hospital [Tokyo].

I have been enabled by the exertions of the ladies

I have been enabled, by the exertions of the ladies, to put one coat of paint on the church. We are exerting ourselves to raise $500 to complete and paint the building. I am pleased to say no debt hangs over the church, as I am determined the building shall remain unfinished rather than be in debt.

Camp Penick . . . Where is it? Why at Little Switzerland of course, and girls, I wish you could see it

Camp Penick is a camp for the girls of the diocese. The boys have had their camp for two or three years and have had a grand time, and now it is time for the girls to have theirs. Camp Penick? Doesn’t it sound interesting and intriguing? Well it is. Mrs. Challen, the new Executive Secretary of the young people is to be the director. Bishop Penick is to be the Chaplain, and you know that’s nice. It is to be for girls between the ages of fourteen and twenty-one. Every Parish in the diocese is to have the privilege of sending two delegates to Camp Penick, and as the capacity of the Camp is limited you had better get your registration fee and application blanks in early… . Where is it? Why at Little Switzerland of course, and girls, I wish you could see it. Rows of tents sitting up right on top of the mountain, looking off over beautiful valleys. A tiny rock altar at which we may worship and have our communions, the most attractive Conference Room you ever sat in, and a mess hall that will hold us all, and all the “eats” we can consume, and also where we can have classes and stunts if it should rain. Camp Penick will be held from June 23rd to July 3rd, and will only cost $18.00; $2.00 registration fee and $16.00 board.

the generosity of Mrs. E.G. Muse

Have kept up regular services at Spring Hope, where also Rev. M. A Barber and myself held a very encouraging mission last July. The congregation there has secured a large and desirable lot, partly through the generosity of Mrs. E. G. Muse, and hope to build a chapel this summer.

we have established a Female Missionary, and Common Prayer Book Society

In giving an account of the State of the Parish, according to the fifth canon, I may further state, that agreeably to the recommendation of the last Convention, we have established a Female Missionary, and Common Prayer Book Society, which numbers about forty subscribers, at three dollars per annum. We have likewise a Bible Society – a Society for the promotion of Industry; one for the Education of poor children, and a Sunday School of one hundred and fifty scholars.
